As someone who prides themselves on being practical with money, my spending habits are usually limited to essentials and the occasional video game on sale. Venturing into the world of non-essentials like LEGO sets was a recent development for me. Despite my childhood love for LEGO, growing up seemed to have shifted my priorities away from such hobbies—until last year, that is.
The high cost of LEGO, especially sets tied to popular franchises, has always been a deterrent. However, the allure of the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant finally won me over. It's been available at a reduced price of under $50 since October of last year, and I recently decided it was time to add a quirky potted plant to my desk.

My interest in this set was piqued after reading IGN's review of the Piranha Plant. As a long-time fan of Mario games, this set seemed like a perfect way to showcase my affection for the franchise. While LEGO's botanical collection offers some appealing desk decor, none capture the whimsical terror quite like this Piranha Plant.

After building the set, I'm thrilled to have it on my desk. It transports me to the Mushroom Kingdom, and I enjoy the sense of cultivating my own Piranha Plant during work hours. The building process itself was as enjoyable as the final product; challenging enough to keep me engaged throughout an afternoon. This is currently my only LEGO Nintendo set, but the experience has me considering adding more to my collection.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?
LEGO sets can be quite pricey, especially with new adult-targeted releases hitting $200 or more each year. It's easy to get carried away, but there's a delicate balance between indulging in a beloved hobby and overspending. The fact that the Mario LEGO set was under $50 made it a justifiable purchase for me. The joy of building it and seeing it on my desk daily is worth it, and while that joy might exceed $50 in value, that's my spending limit for now.
