A recent report from Niko Partners, a leading video game market research firm, suggests Square Enix and Tencent are collaborating on a mobile adaptation of Final Fantasy XIV. This article delves into the details of this potentially significant joint venture.

FFXIV Mobile Game: Largely Unconfirmed

Niko Partners' report highlights 15 games recently approved for release in China by the NPPA. Among them, a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV, reportedly developed by Tencent, stands out. Other notable titles on the list include a mobile and PC version of Rainbow Six, and mobile games based on Marvel Snap, Marvel Rivals, and Dynasty Warriors 8.

While rumors of Tencent's work on a Final Fantasy XIV mobile game circulated last month, neither Square Enix nor Tencent have officially confirmed the project.

According to Niko Partners' analyst Daniel Ahmad's August 3rd tweet (X), the mobile FFXIV title is anticipated to be a standalone MMORPG, distinct from the PC version. However, Ahmad emphasizes that this information stems primarily from industry speculation and lacks official confirmation.

Tencent's significant presence in the mobile gaming market makes this rumored partnership with Square Enix a logical step in Square Enix's stated strategy. Earlier this year, Square Enix announced a commitment to a "multiplatform strategy" for its major titles, including the Final Fantasy franchise. This purported collaboration seems to align with that strategy.
