NetEase's collectible card game, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania on October 29th, 2024. While the game will continue operating in Asia and select MENA regions, this regional end-of-service (EOS) announcement marks the end of an era for many players.
Initially launched in China in September 2021 and globally on June 27th, 2023, the game enjoyed a promising start but ultimately failed to maintain its momentum. Despite its unique blend of Clash Royale-style gameplay and the Harry Potter universe, player feedback points to a significant shift in game mechanics as a contributing factor to its decline.
Many players voiced their frustrations online regarding changes to the reward system, which allegedly favored paying players over skilled, free-to-play users. Nerfs and slower progression for non-spending players seemingly discouraged continued engagement.
The game has already been removed from app stores in the affected regions. However, players in regions where the game remains available can still experience the Hogwarts atmosphere, dorm life, classes, and wizard duels.
