NetEase's upcoming open-world RPG, formerly known as Project Mugen, has been officially renamed Ananta. Initially unveiled at Gamescom 2023, the game has finally released a new trailer, promising further details on December 5th. Until then, enjoy the teaser:
The Meaning Behind the Name Change
While the developers haven't commented, the name Ananta, meaning "infinite" in Sanskrit, aligns with the original title, Mugen, which also signifies infinity. The Chinese title further supports this interpretation.
The renaming has sparked mixed reactions within the gaming community, though the continued development is a welcome relief. Comparisons are already being drawn between Ananta and Hotta Studio's upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness. Ananta's stylish trailer, however, lacks gameplay footage, potentially giving Neverness to Everness a current advantage in the eyes of some players. Personally, I find Ananta's visuals more captivating.
A Curious Turn of Events
Adding to the intrigue, the development team has deleted all previous social media accounts, including a YouTube channel boasting over 100,000 subscribers and millions of views. Only the Discord server remains, albeit renamed. This fresh start has left many players puzzled.
In Ananta, players assume the role of an Infinite Trigger, a paranormal investigator battling supernatural chaos. Notable characters include Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila. For a deeper dive into gameplay features, visit the official website.
