Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nearing Release, Writer Says

By EmmaApr 21,2025

Fans eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie can rest a bit easier thanks to a reassuring update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper. "I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant, adding optimistically, "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think." This much-anticipated project remains shrouded in mystery, with one of the few known details being its setting post-The Rise of Skywalker.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has shed some light on the film's timeline, stating in a February interview with Deadline, "That's also in the future. It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the era following The Rise of Skywalker.

Kennedy also clarified that Levy's movie will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026, saying, "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that." Additionally, there's buzz that Ryan Gosling is slated to star in this intriguing project.

While Tropper's comments suggest progress, fans may need to exercise patience, as the film is not expected to hit theaters until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027. Disney's last Star Wars release was the critically panned Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, and since then, several planned films have been canceled, including projects from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. A Star Wars movie initially slated for late 2026 was also removed from Disney's release calendar in November.

The Obaid-Chinoy project has experienced some shifts, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently stepping away after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Nevertheless, Rey remains a focal point for Disney's future Star Wars endeavors, with reports indicating her appearance in multiple upcoming films.

Disney's Star Wars plans extend even further, with X-Men producer Simon Kinberg set to write a new trilogy, distinct from the Skywalker Saga. The next Star Wars content to captivate audiences will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch.
