Tencent Acquires Majority Stake in Kuro Games, Developer of Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven

Wuthering Waves’ Kuro Games Taken Over by Tencent as Majority Shareholder

Tech giant Tencent has significantly increased its investment in Kuro Games, the developer behind the popular mobile games Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This move grants Tencent a controlling stake in the company.

Tencent's Increased Ownership

Wuthering Waves’ Kuro Games Taken Over by Tencent as Majority Shareholder

Tencent's shareholding in Kuro Games has risen to approximately 51.4%, making it the majority shareholder. This follows an initial investment in 2023 and the subsequent departure of other shareholders. Tencent is now the sole external investor in Kuro Games.

Despite this significant investment, Kuro Games maintains its operational independence, according to internal sources and official statements. This model mirrors Tencent's approach with other successful studios like Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). The increased investment aims to provide a more stable environment for Kuro Games' continued growth and long-term independence. Tencent itself has yet to publicly acknowledge the acquisition.

Kuro Games' success is undeniable, with both Punishing: Gray Raven and Wuthering Waves generating over $120 million USD in revenue each. Wuthering Waves has even garnered a Players' Voice nomination at The Game Awards. This acquisition suggests a strong vote of confidence in Kuro Games' future and its ability to continue delivering high-quality games.
