These five cards form a "cycle," each one representing a different color in Magic: The Gathering. They are all affordable, common-rarity creatures, each linked to one of Tarkir’s three-color clans and featuring an ability to convert mana into a color from their respective clan.
Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak explains, “Three-color limited environments need quite a bit of mana fixing, at all rarities. We wanted many decks to have access to mana fixing, so we created numerous designs dedicated to resolving mana issues. These creatures not only help you play to the board but also allow you to develop your mana simultaneously, unlike other designs such as tapped lands which can put you at a disadvantage while fixing your mana.”

Senior Worldbuilding Designer Lauren Bond notes that while the mechanical aspect of this cycle was the primary focus, common cards often serve as a canvas to paint the world of a set. “These cards highlight the unique characteristics of the clans, showcasing the passionate, action-oriented monks of the Jeskai, the Whisper users within Temur magic, Nagas in the Sultai as protectors and avengers of the jungle, Mardu’s military prowess with supporting roles and diverse dragon forms, and Abzan clerics regrowing the lost kin trees,” she explains.
Some recent Magic sets have faced criticism for leaning too heavily on tropes and thematic gimmicks, even when revisiting established planes. However, Tarkir: Dragonstorm stands out with its straightforward return to Tarkir. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges the importance of such feedback to Wizards of the Coast. “The top-level pitch for Tarkir was established well before the release of Murders at Karlov Manor and subsequent sets, and it didn’t change afterward. We aimed to combine Dragons and Clans in a novel way for Tarkir, with Dragonstorms playing a pivotal role. The pressure to get it right was felt from the start, and we were committed to building the next chapter of this beloved plane with authenticity and substance,” he says.
Tarkir: Dragonstorm is available for preorder now, with the set set to release in both physical and digital formats on April 11. In-store prerelease events will begin on April 4.
