Virtua Fighter Engine Footage Emerges

Virtua Fighter Returns: A Glimpse at Sega's New Fighting Game

Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's return after nearly two decades. Developed by Sega's Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the footage offers a sneak peek at the game's visual style and direction.

The last major Virtua Fighter release was Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, a 2021 remaster. While not actual gameplay, the new footage, first shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, provides a glimpse of the in-engine graphics. The meticulously choreographed combat sequence hints at a polished final product, suggesting a departure from the series' classic polygonal aesthetic.

A New Visual Style for Virtua Fighter

The video showcases a shift towards a more realistic visual style, blending elements reminiscent of Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The iconic character Akira is featured in new outfits, diverging from his traditional look. This visual evolution underscores Sega's commitment to modernizing the franchise.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for the Yakuza series and also involved in the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster, is leading development. While details remain scarce, project director Riichirou Yamada has previously hinted at the game's intended direction. Sega's enthusiasm is evident, with President and COO Shuji Utsumi declaring, "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" This new entry promises to revitalize the franchise and further solidify the 2020s as a golden age for fighting games. The game's release date remains unannounced.
