Phỏm (also known as Tá lả or Tứ lơ khơ) is a popular Vietnamese card game, especially in the northern regions. The names "Phỏm" and "Tá lả" are regional variations. The objective is to strategically collect and discard cards to form sets (Phỏm) while minimizing the point value of remaining unmatched cards. Using a standard 52-card deck and diverse gameplay, Phỏm offers engaging entertainment, making it a favorite at family gatherings and celebrations.

Key Terminology:

• Phỏm: A set of three or more cards of the same suit with consecutive values, or three or more cards of the same rank.
• Junk cards: Unmatched cards not part of a Phỏm.
• Ù: A player with three Phỏm (no junk cards) wins instantly.
• Cơ (Stomach): The remaining undealt cards.
• Móm: A player unable to form any Phỏm at the end of the round.
• Ăn cây (Take the pin): Picking up a discarded card in the last round.
• Gửi (Send): Discarding a card in the last round that can be added to another player's Phỏm.
• Bù (Compensation): A player who takes a discarded card and is then beaten by a player who goes Ù. The card taker compensates the winner. Three consecutive cards also trigger compensation.
• Rê (Re): After discarding, if another player plays a card that you can use, you get an extra turn.

Gameplay:

• Players: 2-4 players. The dealer (or previous round's winner) gets 10 cards; others receive 9. Remaining cards form the Cơ.
• Turns: Counterclockwise, starting with the player holding 10 cards.
• Play: The first player discards a card. Subsequent players can either take the discarded card if it completes a Phỏm or draw a card from the Cơ. After taking/drawing, they discard a card. This continues until a player achieves Ù.
• Game End: The game ends when a player goes Ù, or after four rounds if no one achieves Ù. Points are tallied based on remaining junk cards.
• Final Round: Players must play all their Phỏm, send any applicable cards, and then discard their final card.

Scoring (When no player goes Ù):

• The player with the lowest score wins.
• A, J, Q, K are worth 1, 11, 12, 13 points respectively. Other cards are worth their face value.
• Ties are broken by who discarded their last card first.
• Final score calculation:
  • 1st place: +6 points
  • 2nd place: -1 point
  • 3rd place: -2 points
  • 4th place: -3 points
  • Player who discards a card that's taken: -4 points
  • Player who takes a discarded card: +4 points
  • Player who goes Ù: +15 points (other players lose 5 points each)
  • Player who is "burnt" (Móm): Loses 4 points to the winner.
