"Cujo Gets a Modern Twist in Netflix's New Adaptation"

By ScarlettApr 19,2025

In the latest wave of "here comes a new remake" news—or, if you're a bit more optimistic, "here comes another Stephen King movie" news—a brand new adaptation of *Cujo* is about to bare its teeth. Netflix is set to produce a new film version of King's chilling tale, according to Deadline, and has enlisted Vertigo Entertainment founder and producer Roy Lee to helm the project. However, things are still in their early stages, as no writers, directors, or cast members have been announced yet.

Stephen King's novel *Cujo* was originally published in 1981 and was quickly adapted into a 1983 cult classic horror movie by screenwriters Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner, directed by Lewis Teague. The story revolves around a dedicated mother, portrayed by Dee Wallace, who will stop at nothing to protect her young son from a rabid dog. The narrative intensifies as the pair find themselves trapped in a car with a dead engine, fighting for survival against Cujo, a once-friendly dog turned deadly after being bitten by a rabid bat, as they battle both the threat outside and the looming danger of heatstroke.

*Cujo* is just one of many beloved Stephen King stories that have successfully transitioned to the screen over the years, and there has been a notable resurgence of King adaptations recently. Oz Perkins’ adaptation of King’s short story *The Monkey* was released in February, and fans can look forward to the Glen Powell-led version of *The Running Man* and JT Mollner’s take on *The Long Walk* (also produced by Lee and Vertigo) later this year. Additionally, the *IT* prequel series *Welcome to Derry* is set to premiere on HBO. Meanwhile, the iconic horror film *Carrie* is being reimagined as an eight-episode series on Prime Video, directed by horror visionary Mike Flanagan.

Stephen King fans have been enjoying a feast of adaptations lately, and with the new *Cujo* film on the horizon, there's even more gourmet content on its way.
