Ubisoft Restarts Project Maverick Development: Rumors

By BlakeApr 22,2025

The extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe, now taking place in the rugged landscapes of Alaska, has undergone a complete reboot, as reported by Insider Gaming. Initially known as Project Maverick, the game was originally designed as a multiplayer expansion for Far Cry 7. However, after an internal review, the development direction shifted dramatically. Despite receiving positive feedback from both employees and testers, Ubisoft's management opted to redirect the majority of resources to Project Blackbird, which is Far Cry 7. The final blow to the multiplayer aspect came with the reassignment of the technical team to other projects.

The responsibility for the project has been transferred to Ubisoft Sherbrooke, a studio renowned for its expertise in development support. Almost the entire original development team has been reassigned to focus on the next installment of the Far Cry series.

According to insider Tom Henderson (as of mid-December 2024), Far Cry 7 aims to plunge players into an atmosphere of tension and desperation, with time as the primary adversary. The storyline centers on the kidnapping of the protagonist's family by a mysterious conspiracy cult, which is conducting terrifying experiments with hallucinogens on animals and children. Players must race against the clock to rescue their loved ones within a stringent 72-hour in-game timeframe, which translates to 24 hours in real-time. This time constraint adds a layer of intensity and urgency to the gameplay.

A distinctive feature of Far Cry 7 will be a timer displayed on the protagonist's wristwatch, serving as a constant reminder of the ticking clock. This element will amplify the sense of urgency, compelling players to make swift and strategic decisions. Far Cry 7 is poised to offer a unique gaming experience where every second is precious, and every decision can lead to significant outcomes.
