A Beloved Game Deserves a Modern Update
Bloodborne, the critically acclaimed 2015 RPG, remains a fan favorite, with many eager to revisit Yharnam on modern platforms. Although no official announcement has been made, recent Instagram posts from FromSoftware and PlayStation Italia featuring the game have sent speculation soaring.
On August 24th, FromSoftware shared three images showcasing the game's title and the hashtag "#bloodborne." The images depicted Djura, a hunter encountered in Old Yharnam, the player character exploring Yharnam's heart, and the eerie Charnel Lane graveyards.
While these posts could simply be a nostalgic throwback, dedicated Bloodborne players on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) are meticulously analyzing every detail, searching for clues hinting at a long-awaited remaster. The timing is particularly intriguing, especially given a similar post from PlayStation Italia on August 17th.
PlayStation Italia's post, translated, asked fans to choose their favorite iconic Bloodborne locations, prompting a flood of comments expressing a desire for a Yharnam return, with many playfully suggesting a PC or next-gen console release as the most iconic location of all.
The Hunt for a Modern Bloodborne Continues - Almost a Decade Later
Released exclusively for PS4 in 2015, Bloodborne cultivated a devoted following and widespread critical acclaim, often cited among the greatest video games ever created. Despite this, a sequel or remaster remains elusive.
Fans point to the 2020 Demon's Souls remake (originally released in 2009) as a potential precedent, but concerns linger about the potential wait time. Given Demon's Souls' decade-long journey to a remake, the fear is that Bloodborne might face a similar extended period. As the game nears its tenth anniversary, the anticipation is palpable.
Fuel was added to the fire in a February interview with Eurogamer, where Bloodborne director Hidetaka Miyazaki acknowledged the advantages of remastering the game for modern hardware, emphasizing the increased accessibility for a wider player base.
However, Miyazaki's comments, while hopeful, don't guarantee a remaster. Unlike Elden Ring, which FromSoftware fully publishes, Bloodborne's IP rights rest with Sony. In subsequent interviews, Miyazaki has reiterated his inability to comment directly on the matter due to the IP ownership.
Bloodborne's passionate community continues to hope for a remake. Despite its critical success and sales figures, Sony hasn't yet expanded the game's reach beyond the PS4. Whether the current speculation translates into reality remains to be seen.
