Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – A Fusion of Turn-Based and Real-Time Gameplay

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's Artistic FlairDrawing inspiration from the Belle Epoque era of France and beloved JRPGs, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 innovatively combines turn-based strategy with real-time action. Heavily influenced by the Final Fantasy and Persona franchises, the game aims to forge its own identity within the genre.

Following a well-received demo at SGF, creative director Guillaume Broche discussed the game's design philosophy with Eurogamer. His passion for turn-based combat, coupled with a desire for high-fidelity visuals, formed the foundation of the project. He cited Persona (Atlus) and Octopath Traveler (Square Enix) as stylish examples that helped shape his vision.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's Unique WorldClair Obscur: Expedition 33 features a compelling narrative centered on preventing a mysterious Paintress from unleashing death once more. The game boasts unique environments, including the gravity-defying Flying Waters, promising a captivating adventure.

Combat blends real-time reflexes with turn-based commands. Players select actions strategically, but must also react swiftly to enemy attacks. This dynamic system draws comparisons to Persona, Final Fantasy, and the critically acclaimed Sea of Stars.

Broche expressed surprise at the overwhelmingly positive reception. While anticipating interest from turn-based fans, the level of enthusiasm exceeded his expectations.

While acknowledging Persona's influence, Broche clarified to PC Gamer that the Final Fantasy series, particularly entries VIII, IX, and X, played a more significant role in the game's development. He emphasized that the game isn't a direct imitation but rather a reflection of his personal gaming history and artistic sensibilities.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's Open WorldThe open world of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 offers complete character control. Players can seamlessly switch between party members and utilize unique traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles. Broche encourages experimentation, hoping players will discover creative character builds and strategies.

The development team, in a PlayStation Blog post, expressed their hope that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will resonate with players in the same way classic RPGs impacted their lives.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
